If you have downloaded a PSD art mockup file and are staring at a stack of Photoshop layers, this is the workflow you actually need.
A PSD mockup file is not really about creating a room scene from scratch. It is about taking a pre-made scene, swapping in your artwork, and exporting a polished presentation image for Etsy, Shopify, your portfolio, or social media.
If you want to build your own mockup scene from an AI-generated room, read our guide to creating an art mockup in Photoshop from scratch.

What Is a PSD Art Mockup File?
A PSD art mockup file is a layered Photoshop document that already contains the room, wall, frame, lighting, and shadow setup. Your job is usually just to replace a placeholder layer with your own artwork.
Most good mockup files use smart objects. A smart object is a special Photoshop layer that lets you drop your artwork into the scene while preserving the perspective and effects already built into the mockup.
Step-by-Step: How to Use a PSD Mockup in Photoshop
Step 1: Open the PSD File
Launch Photoshop and open your `.psd` file. If you do not have Photoshop, Photopea is a free browser-based alternative that can also open PSD mockup files and handle smart objects. Give the document a second to load, especially if it contains high-resolution layers, textures, or multiple frame options.
Step 2: Find the Smart Object Layer
In the Layers panel, look for a layer named something like Your Design Here, Replace Me, or Artwork. It usually has the smart object icon on the thumbnail.
Step 3: Open the Smart Object
Double-click the smart object thumbnail. Photoshop opens a separate document where the placeholder artwork lives. This is the file you actually replace.
Step 4: Insert Your Artwork
Delete or hide the placeholder art, then place your artwork into the smart object document. Use File → Place Embedded or drag the file in directly. Scale it to fit the canvas cleanly without stretching.
Step 5: Save the Smart Object
Press Cmd/Ctrl + S. Go back to the main PSD window and your artwork should automatically update inside the mockup scene.
Step 6: Toggle Optional Layers
Many PSD mockups include extra layers for frame colors, matboards, wall tones, shadows, or styling props. Turn visibility on and off to test the versions that work best with your art.
Step 7: Export the Final Mockup
When everything looks right, export the image using File → Export → Export As. JPEG is usually best for product listings, while PNG can help if you want cleaner text or edges.
Common Problems With PSD Mockups
The artwork looks cropped or distorted
Reopen the smart object and make sure your artwork matches the smart object canvas proportions before saving.
Nothing changes after saving
Make sure you edited the actual smart object layer, not just a grouped placeholder or text note layer above it.
The mockup file feels messy
That is normal. Many purchased PSDs are heavily layered. Collapse groups you do not need and focus only on the artwork smart object and any obvious customization folders.
The scene still feels generic
PSD mockups save time, but they lock you into someone else's composition. If you want a more original room or brand look, it may be better to build your own mockup scene.
When PSD Mockups Are the Right Choice
PSD mockups are a strong option when you want speed, already have Photoshop, and do not need to invent a new room from scratch.
Use a PSD art mockup if:
- • You bought or downloaded a mockup pack and want to use it correctly
- • You only need to swap artwork into an existing scene
- • You want perspective and shadows handled automatically
- • You are creating listing images quickly and do not need a custom room
Want to Create the Room Scene Yourself?
If your goal is not just using a PSD, but actually creating an art mockup in Photoshop, the workflow is different. You need to start with a room image, clean the wall, place the art, style the frame, and blend everything together.
That is exactly what we cover in our companion tutorial: How to Create an Art Mockup in Photoshop.
