A loose, expressive portrait study centers on an older man with closed eyes, a prominent curled mustache, and heavy brows. Broad translucent washes establish the face and clothing, while darker, searching strokes define the mustache, hair, collar, and surrounding contours. The unfinished edges and visible construction marks give the piece the immediacy of a working sketch, with the figure emerging dramatically from a softly tinted ground.
