THE SENTINEL PINES

A stylised night-time settlement unfolds across layered shadowy hills, with clustered houses, winding paths, fences, and tall sentinel pine trees framing the scene. Saturated blue forms are edged and interrupted by stark white rooftops while the nearly black-brown sky gives the small deserted settlement an uncanny, storybook stillness. Flattened perspective and simplified architecture lend the painting a folk-art character of long ago, while vigorous marks and high-contrast shapes create a striking, graphic surface.
