Self-Portrait

Luz Pagan

The Art of Oneself. This exhibition focuses on the autobiographical theory on artists and the way they see themselves through their art. Throughout the exhibition you will see art pieces that reflect on how artists perceive themselves through experiences, memories, emotion, relationships, backgrounds, culture, and more. This exhibition examines the relationship between the private/public self through a creative lens of self expression and identity. Autobiography portrayed in art can take on various forms of self-representation through various means of objects, photographs, bodies, memories, paintings, and fictional identities created showing a more complex view of how they perceive themselves. Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, and Vincent van Gogh are some of the few artists displayed here in this exhibition. These artists are well known for the art they created by displaying their own autobiographies through paintings. Over time through the experiences they faced/lives they lived, their identities and how they portray themselves changed. This exhibition gives artists and viewers alike a view on the various creative approaches there are to expressing oneself through art. Art is limitless with what it can create and show. Viewers are invited to give their own perceptions on what they see in various autobiographies displayed, comparing it to their own experiences that align with the art piece.
