Mango Tree and Desk Chair

Matt Hufford

My work is interested in the relationship between the materials I use as an artist and the context and meaning of the subject I am painting. This body of digital work emerged in 2020 during the lockdown period of the COVID-19 pandemic when life was severely restricted, and it continued as illness limited my ability to go outside and paint with oils and watercolor. I created these paintings in a single session from direct observation, using only the circle brush tool set to 100% opacity in Adobe PS to mimic the physical act of mixing painting colors. This series ultimately was born from my pressing desire to continue creating art that reflected my environment as a disabled person while facing the isolation of quarantine and lockdown.
