Hobble skirts were a fashion trend from 1908–1914 featuring an extremely narrow hem at the bottom that made the wearer's steps hobble. The trend was inspired by Japanese kimonos and the story of Edith Berg, who tied her skirt while flying in a Wright Brothers airplane. Because they severely restricted movement, these skirts caused fatal accidents and were eventually abandoned around the start of World War I.
