Large crowd - belonging through shared work. Instead of showing one powerful central person, it gives us many ordinary people. Suggests that citizens begin to see themselves as part of a larger community with shared future. The Russian Museum says Buchkin based the painting on sketches and drawings from the actual 1920 event.
