Keeper Beneath the Painted Sky

A stylized portrait presents a dark-skinned, beaded figure in profile, wrapped in rust, brown, and charcoal garments and holding a long pale staff or pipe. The elaborate headwear combines featherlike forms with a striking band of piano-key patterns, while a deep blue and gold celestial field rises behind the figure in sweeping arcs, circles, and a partial sun. Broad painted shapes, outlined facial features, and visible surface variation give the work the direct, expressive character of contemporary folk portraiture.
