A finely observed ram lies against a nearly black ground, its curled horns, woolly coat, and folded limbs illuminated by a concentrated, directional light. The subdued setting and careful modeling give the animal a solemn presence, while the low horizontal composition recalls the intimate still-life studies of Old Master painting.
