The Keeper of Ashes

A solitary, hooded figure stands frontally against a nearly black ground, his long pointed cowl and heavy robe emerging from deep shadow. Both hands cradle a small rounded vessel at the center of the composition, while restrained illumination catches the folds of fabric, the guarded face, and the worn surface of the container. The stark symmetry and compressed space lend the work a solemn, enigmatic presence reminiscent of an old-master devotional study.
