A richly composed Baroque interior gathers the young infanta, her attendants, a court artist, dwarfs, and a resting dog within the shadowed space of a royal studio. A mirror and the distant doorway deepen the scene’s shifting viewpoints, while the tall canvas at left and the clustered figures create an unusually self-aware theater of looking. Subtle illumination settles on the infanta’s pale dress and the attendants’ faces, drawing them forward from the deep, atmospheric darkness.
