Figures Beneath the Black Arch

A densely populated modernist interior gathers sharply dressed men and women around a central, animated figure in an orange suit. Faces appear masklike and individualized, while angular limbs, overlapping bodies, and tilted furnishings create a theatrical sense of movement. A deep black arch dominates the background, setting off the earthy reds, ochres, blues, and cream garments; a small handwritten sheet at lower right adds the feel of an enigmatic social tableau.
