A forceful monochrome portrait fills the canvas with the head and shoulders of an elderly bearded man. Broad, angular strokes carve his furrowed brow, heavy moustache, deep-set eyes, and flowing beard into a stark black ground, while the close cropping gives the face an imposing, almost sculptural presence. Visible bristle marks and shifting tonal layers preserve the immediacy of the painted surface, lending the figure a stern, contemplative intensity.
