A forceful monochrome portrait presents an older bearded man in close-up, his narrowed eyes and angular features emerging from sweeping bands of gray, white, and black. Broad, visible strokes carve the brow, beard, hair, and heavy coat into a nearly sculptural structure, while the dark ground compresses the composition around his stern, contemplative presence. The raw handling gives the face an expressive, weathered intensity.
