Lamentation

A monumental fresco presents the mourning of Christ beneath a sky crowded with anguished, circling angels. The figures gather along a rocky slope in tightly interlocking groups, their gestures and lowered gazes directing attention toward the reclining body, while the stark tree at right anchors the scene against the blue field. Broad, weighty forms, expressive faces, and softly modeled drapery give the sacred drama an immediate human gravity.
