Flight Is Not a Crime

A documentary-style photograph records a handwritten German banner reading “Flucht ist kein Verbrechen” (“Flight is not a crime”) displayed inside a church. An open book rests on a small metal lectern beside three slender candles, while a religious painting and architectural fragments recede into the muted background. The improvised sign introduces a direct civic statement into the solemn setting, creating a quiet tension between sanctuary, ritual, and public advocacy.
