The Guard and the Reader

A sepia-toned historical scene unfolds in a vaulted interior, where a stern, turbaned guard stands beside a spear while a veiled woman sits quietly over an open book. Architectural arches recede into the background, and a helmet, vessel, and scroll-like objects anchor the lower foreground. Fine graphite hatching and delicate contour work give the piece the atmosphere of an academic preparatory drawing, balancing solemn watchfulness with contemplative stillness.
