The Lariat in Shadow

A solitary cowboy dominates the vertical composition, caught mid-motion as he raises a coiled lariat overhead and gathers its loose length at his waist. His weathered face, broad hat, leather shirt, belt, and heavy trousers emerge from a nearly black ground through carefully controlled amber highlights. The looping rope creates a sweeping circular structure around the figure, while the restrained lighting gives the scene the gravity of an old Western portrait and the charged stillness of a moment just before action.
