Cat Beneath the Lilies

A wide-eyed white cat occupies the lower portion of the painting, its pointed ears and softly modeled fur set against a lively field of floating lily-like forms and layered color. Broad, visibly worked strokes build a playful, dreamlike setting, while the cat’s patterned blue-violet garment gives the portrait a whimsical character. The composition balances the attentive face below with a richly animated upper field, allowing glimpses of canvas texture and energetic painterly marks to remain part of the work’s charm.
