A magnificent, voluminous, bell-shaped silk gown supported by a structured steel framework underneath. This dress featured dramatic tiered flounces, a tightly fitted bodice, and wide pagoda sleeves trimmed with delicate lace. Favored heavily by the wealthy to signal high status through the sheer consumption of expensive textiles, it was quickly adapted into cheaper calico versions by the working-class as industrial production scaled.
